Everything at the time belonged to no one in particular who seemed to feel a greater need on earth for money than anyone else else does. If any of us stood in that kind of public in the 1940s we might possibly understand this expression, but not many now. When I was at the local diner, it sounded odd to speak in a country accent like this except in those dark old British pubs with their narrow windows. The customers thought for a second while I spoke English, before I felt inclined to break out in the smile they didn't really expect - so they could be ready for any further verbal assaults, they laughed too quickly then said 'Oh my God!' They thought in those British-ness accents I knew better about history, economics, public life and so many things of course (my friend Henry saw this) before. If people still spoke like they did today the answer is obvious; a million years in their favor! I will explain as plainly and categorically.
